The scale and extent of the appalling performance by the energy sector was yet again revealed during a recent briefing by distribution companies (Discos) to the Senate Standing Committee on Energy as well as the Ministry of Finance. This acknowledgement has prompted Ali Zafar, the caretaker minister for energy, to state in the Senate as well as in his media interactions that while the PML-N government did increase generation capacity yet it ignored strengthening the obsolete transmission and distribution network which is the main reason behind load shedding after the caretaker government took over power on 1 June this year.
